Your Skincare Needs

Skincare is Healthcare

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the skin is related to the TCM organ Lung, or in other words, the Lung controls and regulates the skin. This is the Metal element. You know you have a Metal imbalance if you are experiencing:

Shortness of breath, respiratory allergies, or skin problems
Dry skin and mucus membranes
Frequent illness and/or lingering illness
Excessive grief and melancholy
Disorganized, unable to keep commitments, sedentary
Your symptoms are worse in the Autumn or dry climates

A balanced Metal element looks like this:

Balanced attachment, knowing when to hold on and when to let go
Moist, supple skin and mucus membranes
Strong immune system, recovering from illness quickly
Strong lungs and voice
Grieves deeply and completely before letting go
Reflects inwardly; inspired by beauty in many forms
Strong, discriminating, principled, living by inner values

The lungs are about inhalation and exhalation. We need to breath life into our very being, but also exhale and clear what no longer serves us. The challenge of the Metal phase is to open to inspiration and harvest what is valuable in our lives and let go of what no longer furthers your growth. It is also about the ability to develop the strength to grieve loss.

If you are feeling like you may be out of imbalance in the Metal element, acupuncture can help. Also, follow these basic guidelines to help balance Metal:

Eat cooked, warm, moisture filled vegetables, soups, and stews
Moisten the diet by cooking with coconut oil or ghee
Get exercise in the fresh air
Get enough rest
Run a humidifier to keep airways moist
Avoid cold drinks, cold and raw foods, sugary, dairy, and unsprouted or unfermented wheat
Use journaling to explore memories, feelings, and thoughts

Routine & Creating Your Own Certainty

I'm sure you are tired of me (and everyone else) saying that we are living in uncertain times, but this week I would like to focus on ways we can create more certainty in our lives, even when there is none to be found around you.

You most likely have felt to some degree the affects that COVID has had on your life or the lives of those around you, and life as we know it may not ever return to the "normal" we once knew. So now we are all being given a choice. This is a test of our strength, health, creativity, ingenuity, and ability to maintain our mental fortitude while under extreme pressure. So in this test, will you chose to be the victim of circumstance, or will you use this as fuel to change gears, to climb a different type of ladder, and to make a sustainable life for yourself?

While I can't lay out the direction of your life for you, I can offer some guidance that may help with your success and ability to take control of your life on this new path. Lets start by reducing some stress and bringing in some motivation through a trusted daily routine. To get you started, below is a little bit of movement you can do daily to wake up the mind, body, and soul.

This week I want to give your mind a break from overloading on various health and wellness topics, and am keeping it short and sweet with a gentle reminder and encouragement to move.

In the Stress and Anxiety and Spring into Movement newsletters I mentioned a little bit about the benefits of getting in a enough movement everyday, how it can help us ward off stress, what it does to improve our mental, emotional, and physical health, and what will happen if we don't move enough. I hope that throughout these offerings you have captured just how pertinent movement is for overall health and have been inspired to move more.

In a previous newsletter on breath I briefly mentioned the effects of stress on the body and ways that mindful breathing can help reduce the stress response. But I wanted to dive deeper on anxiety, the ways it shows up in our lives, in our bodies, in our minds, and ways in which we can reduce it.

I'm sure you have heard by now how important sleep is for your health, but do you know exactly how many functions are impaired by not getting enough sleep?

And not getting enough sleep doesn't just include the number of hours from when you first close you eyes to when you get up in the morning, it also encompasses the quality of sleep you get throughout the night.

So how is the quality of your sleep?

Do you feel rested upon waking in the morning, or are you exhausted from restless sleep, tossing and turning, or excessive dreaming?
